On March 16, 2017, Training Tomorrow’s Doctors for China－The first AMEE Conference in China, co-organized by the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, the Association For Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), and Zhongshan School of Medicine, was held in the First Affiliated Hospital at SYSU. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Kuang Ming, Vice President of the First Affiliated Hospital. Prof. Xiao Haipeng, President of the First Affiliated Hospital; Mr. Jin Shengguo, Deputy Director of the Department of Health Science, Technology and Education, National Health and Family Planning Commission; Ms. Peng Wei, Deputy Director of Guangdong Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission; Prof. Li Mengfeng, Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University; and Prof. Ronald Harden, General Secretary and Treasurer of AMEE, delivered a speech respectively.

Prof. Xiao Haipeng reviewed the fine tradition and achievements in medical education at the First Affiliated Hospital. He also listed the challenges for medical education system in terms of competence, faculty and curriculum system. He hoped that through the cooperation with AMEE and through high quality teaching, we would ensure the quality health service by the quality training of tomorrow’s doctors for China.

Prof. Li Mengfeng extended congratulations on the first AMEE Conference in China. He reviewed the history and achievements of medical education at Sun Yat-sen University, and spoke highly of the important role played by all the affiliated hospitals in medical research, talent cultivation, medical service and social responsibilities. He also affirmed the new methods and new ideas brought by this Conference.


The guests attending the opening ceremony also included Prof. Trevor Gibbs, Development Officer of AMEE; Prof. David Taylor, Reader in Medical Education at University of Liverpool; Prof. Debra Nestel, Professor of Surgical Education at University of Melbourne; Dr. Ross Scalese, Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Miami; and over 500 representatives from various hospitals around China.

At the three-day conference, renowned scholars in medical education presented speeches, introducing advanced educational skills and discussing approaches to solve the existing problems in medical education in China. This conference is an important step for building the First Affiliated Hospital into an international medical education center.
