Two SYSU Professors Elected Academicians of CAS

Translated by Eric Shi

According to the election results of new academicians and foreign academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2009 announced by CAS, SYSU Professor Xu Ningsheng was elected academician of Information Technological Science Division of CAS, and Professor Chen Xiaoming academician of Chemistry Division of CAS.

A scientist in the field of vacuum micro-nano electronics, Professor Xu was born in Puning, Guangdong in July 1957, and is a native of Chenghai, Guangdong. He graduated from the SYSU’s Department of Physics in 1982, and obtained his doctorate degree from Aston University, England in 1986. He is now the head of State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technology, deputy chief editor of Chinese Science Bulletin, and president of Beijing Branch of the International Society for Information Display.

Prof. Xu has long been engaged in the research of vacuum micro-nanoelectronics, particularly in the basic research of new field emission of cold cathode and vacuum micro-nano electron array devices, and their applications in functional devices. Prof. Xu’s research is concerned with the features and mechanism of diamonds of large scale and related field emission of film, their physical interpretation model, and the application of the diamond-like carbon films in vacuum microelectronics array. He has conducted basic research in the nano cold cathode field emission application and the development of controlled growth of nano cold cathode materials and production technology of electron source array, and developed a new type of nano cold cathode device. He has also conducted research in electron emission model of "metal-insulator-metal" and printing type cold cathode electron source preparation technology. Prof. Xu has claimed the second prize of National Natural Science and many other awards.

Professor Chen Xiaoming was born in Jieyang, Guangdong Province in 1961. He received his bachelor and master degrees from SYSU in 1983 and 1986 respectively. He started his teaching career at SYSU after obtaining the doctorate degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1992. He took on the professorship in 1995, and is now the doctorate supervisor and dean of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

Prof. Chen has long been engaged in the research of functional coordination compound chemistry and crystal engineering, mainly in the following two areas. First, he has developed and innovated the controlled assembly and structural control methods of coordination polymers, particularly porous structure, magnetic micro-structures and interpenetrating network structure, spiral structure, and supramolecular isomer structures that represent the “smart” and “switch” type dynamic changes in face of the physical and chemical stimulation of the outside world.

Second, as a major pioneer, Prof. Chen has developed the solvothermal in situ metal/ligand reaction method, and found more than 10 kinds of metal-induced reactions of organic molecules that can hardly be conducted with traditional methods, and applied the In situ reaction method to controlled assembly of porous structure coordination polymers. He has used crystal engineering methods to conduct the research in the reaction mechanism of complex system of multi-step solvothermal in situ metal/ligand reaction. Prof. Chen has won the second prize of National Natural Science and many other awards.
