Evaluated by the Academic Degree Council of Medicine of SYSU and sanctioned by SYSU, the Institute of Hematology of SYSU had been formally launched recently. The mission of the institute is to integrate the strength of hematology, set up a platform for strong cooperation, and tackle significant science and research project.

The SYSU Institute of Hematology strives for a breakthrough in the research of pathogenesis of Hematology and molecular targeted therapy. It will enhance the cooperation with noted research institutes home and abroad, carrying out translational medicine in which clinical medicine is driven and served by basic medicine. The SYSU Institute of Hematology was developed from the Research Unit of Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences founded by Professor Liang Jinhua in the early days. It relies on the Third Affiliated Hospital of SYSU and cooperates with the First, Second and Fifth Affiliated Hospital of SYSU, Department of Oncology, Zhongshan Medical University as well as Da An Gene Co., Ltd. of SYSU, etc. Professor Liang Jinhua and Luo Shaokai take up the post of the Emeritus Director of the institute, Professor Liu Qiang, Li Juan the director and another 5 professors including Lin Dongjun, Yin Songmei, Lu Yue, Huang Huiqiang as well as Hou Lijun the deputy director.

All the cooperative Units of the SYSU Institute of Hematology possess integrated systems of scientific talents in hematology. Moreover, these units are in the forefront among the same type units in aspect of the case load per year, the new technique developed, the academic publications and the scientific research funds and accomplishments. At present, each of the units has established favorable cooperative relationship with one another. With resource advantages integrated, key point breakthrough and joint forces, it is expected to better promote the synchronous development in basic and clinical research and build a hematology institute which acts on international convention with strong comprehensive strength and which integrates clinical service, scientific research and teaching together. This will contribute to the application of national key research project for the whole group units, ultimately realizing the goal to construct provincial key laboratory and national key discipline.
