The Center for Creative Writing (CCW) of the School of Foreign Languages at Sun Yat-sen University celebrated the end of the semester with a meeting of its student readings series, Speakeasy. The event featured SYSU students and faculty reading original creative work in English, and was held on the evening of June 30 at a café near the South Campus.

Several students from the English Department read aloud from their own poetry or narrative essays. Then, featured reader Professor Dai Fan, head of the English Department and founder of the CCW, read selections from personal essays. The attending crowd was a mix of both native speakers and non-native speakers of English, all of whom greeted the warm atmosphere of the reading with enthusiasm.

Speakeasy, which meets about once a month during the regular school semester, showcases creative writing from SYSU students for an audience of literarily engaged community members. The event is open to the public and takes place regularly at Longer Café (暖閣咖啡屋). Speakeasy is hosted and organized by English Department instructors Jenny Lewis and Rachelle Escamilla.
