Academician Guo Guangcan delivered a lecture entitled “One Hundred Years of the Photon” at SYSU

On the morning of March 30, 2015, Prof. Guo Guangcan, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a lecture entitled “One Hundred Years of the Photon” in Swasey Hall at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). This is part of a series of activities of the First Guangdong Academicians Summit, sponsored by Academicians Sodality of Guangdong.

Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU; Prof. Zhu Xiping, Vice President of SYSU; Prof. Wang Biao, Chinese Dean of Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology; researchers, teachers and students from School of Physics and Engineering attended the lecture.

In his lecture, Academician Guo Guangcan explained the birth, characteristics, charm and definition of the photon. He introduced the latest research and achievements in quantum cryptography, quantum entanglement network, quantum simulation, quantum computing, etc, and the possible future applications of these technologies. He hoped that Chinese scientists would make outstanding contributions to mankind in the second revolution of quantum mechanics.

Academician Guo Guangcan is currently Professor of Physics at University of Science and Technology of China, Director of Key Laboratory of Quantum Information of CAS, and President of Chinese Optical Society. He was elected as Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2003, and Academician of Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) in 2009. His major research interests are in the theoretical and experimental study of quantum optics, quantum cryptography, quantum communication, and quantum computation.

Since 2009, Academician Guo Guangcan has been a member of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies of SYSU, and has offered valuable guidance.
