On October 30, 2015, Prof. Qian Depei was appointed as Dean of School of Data and Computer Science at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, Mr. Wu Shaoxin, Director of Organization Department, Ms. Luo Teng, Director of Human Resources Department, Prof. Wang Xuehua, Director of Talent Development Office, Ms. Xie Manhua, Party Secretary of School of Data and Computer Science, Prof. Ma Xiao, Vice Dean of School of Data and Computer Science, and teacher representatives attended the appointment ceremony, which was presided over by Prof. Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU.
At the appointment ceremony, President Luo Jun welcomed Prof. Qian Depei to join SYSU. He also thanked the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou for their support for the School of Data and Computer Science. He said that the University will provide great support for the School’s development. The School should formulate a general planning for development in talent cultivation, scientific research, discipline construction and social service. On behalf of the University, President Luo Jun signed the appointment contract with Prof. Qian Depei and presented the letter of appointment to him.

Prof. Qian Depei presented his work plan regarding the development direction, organizational structure, faculty development and management system of the School of Data and Computer Science.

Prof. Ma Xiao introduced the general situation of the School of Data and Computer Science since its establishment in June this year.

Brief Introduction to Professor Qian Depei:

Qian Depei, professor at both Sun Yat-sen University and Beihang University, dean of the School of Data and Computer Science of Sun Yat-sen University.

He graduated from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1977, majoring in Computer, and graduated from the Department of Computer Science of North Texas State University in the United States with his master degree in Computer Science. He had being working at Xi’an Jiaotong University from 1977 to 2010 and became a professor at Beihang University in 2000. He joined in Sun Yat-sen University in October 2015.

He has been working on computer architecture and computer networks for many years. His current research interests include high performance computer architecture and implementation technologies, distributed computing, network management and network performance measurement. He has published over 300 papers in journals and conferences.

Since 1996 he has been the member of the expert group and expert committee of the National High-tech Research & Development Program (the 863 program) in information technology. He was the chief scientist of three 863 key projects on high performance computing since 2002. Currently, he is the chief scientist of the 863 key project on high productivity computer and application service environment.
