On March 26, 2018, the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Conference was held in Guangzhou. Twenty-five research achievements of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) received the 2017 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. Among them, as the primary research unit at which the research project was undertaken and completed, SYSU won 21 awards, including 1 outstanding contribution award, 6 first prizes, 8 second prizes and 6 third prizes; and 4 projects with SYSU as a participating unit won the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award.

Professor Xiao-Ming Chen from the School of Chemistry won the outstanding contribution award. Professor Xiao-Ming Chen is Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (since 2009), Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences for Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS), and Fellow of IUPAC (since 2013). His research interests include synthesis, structures and properties of functional coordination polymers (or MOFs) and metal complexes, especially the porous and electric/magnetic coordination materials. He has published more than 430 papers in the international journals including Science, Journal of American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Accounts of Chemical Research, Chemical Society Reviews, and Chemical Reviews. He has currently more than 33,000 citations and H-index of 94 in Web of Science. He is member of advisory boards of Chemical Communications (RSC), CrystEngComm (RSC), ACS Central Science, and Crystal Growth & Design (ACS), Chemistry An Asian Journal, etc. He was awarded China National Natural Science Prize in 2007, TWAS prize in Chemistry in 2012 and Highly Cited Researcher in Chemistry (Thomson Reuters, 2014-2017).

Six SYSU projects won first prize of the 2017 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. They are: “The studies of high-performance electrocatalyst design and the performance control mechanism” undertaken by Professor Li Gaoren from the School of Chemistry; “Mining and Functional Mechanism of Noncoding RNAs Associated With Grain Yield and Reproductive Development in Rice” undertaken by Professor Chen Yueqin from the School of Life Sciences; “Microenviroment regulations and functions in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma progression” undertaken by Professor Song Libing from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center; “Key technologies and the application in complex water resources utilization in humid areas of South China under environment change” undertaken by Professor Chen Xiaohong from the School of Geography and Planning; “The Innovation and Application of Individualized Strategies of Diagnosis and Treatment in Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma” undertaken by Professor Lin Tongyu from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center; and “Technological innovation and clinical practice of early vascular injury evaluation and intervention” undertaken by Professor Tao Jun from The First Affiliated Hospital.
