Recently, the Orthopedics Department of Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital officially established Sports Medicine Department. Shen Huiyong, Director of the hospital as well as Head of the Orthopedics Department, said that as one of the units that had first developed arthroscopy in the country, the Orthopedics Department had a good foundation in the field of Sports Medicine, it had made diagnosis and given treatment to almost 200 athletes from the national team, provincial and municipal team, enabling these good athletes to return to competition. The Sports Medicine Department is going to advocate the idea of mini-invasive treatment, and carry out treatment for sports strain injury, degenerative arthropathy, cartilage injury and repair, ligament rupture and reconstruction, tissue transplantation, etc.

Professor Li Weiping, Head of the Sports Medicine Department of Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital, said that in the aspect of Clinical Medicine, Sports Medicine means diagnosing and treating various kinds of joint diseases (especially sports injury) with more delicate treatment (including the minimally invasive technique under arthroscope or with the help of arthroscope), which strives to reach less trauma, quick recovery and good curative effect after operation.
