On July 5, the signing ceremony of Medical and Health Cooperation Framework Agreement between the People’s Government of Hainan Province and Sun Yat-sen University was held on South Campus. According to the bilateral agreement, the People’s Government of Hainan Province entrusts SYSU with operations management of the newly established Hainan Provincial Ophthalmic Hospital, and technical support for the newly established Hainan Provincial Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Hospital. Lin Fanglue, Vice Governor of Hainan Province, Feng Ming, Deputy Secretary General of Hainan Provincial Government, Bai Zhiqin, Director of Department of Health of Hainan Province, Han Yingwei, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of Department of Health of Hainan Province, Lü Yong, Deputy Director of Department of Finance of Hainan Province and Director of Finance Supervision Resident Office, Li Zhuori, President of Hainan Provincial People’s Hospital, Xu Ningsheng, President of SYSU, Xiao Haipeng, Deputy President of The First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU, Liu Yizhi, Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Han Ling, Director of Office of Hospital Administration of SYSU, Chen Wangnan, Director of Office of the President of SYSU, and experts and professors of related disciplines attended the ceremony. The signing ceremony was moderated by Wang Jianping, Executive Vice President of SYSU.

   On behalf of the CPC Hainan Provincial Committee and the People’s Government of Hainan Province, Vice Governor Lin Fanglue expressed respect and appreciation for SYSU’s long-term support for the economic and social development of Hainan Province. He introduced Hainan’s practices in stressing ecological protection, tapping tourism resources, innovating social management and caring for people’s livelihood. He said that the medical cooperation agreement to make use of the advantages of SYSU’s talents, research and medical resources to construct Hainan Provincial Ophthalmic Hospital, Hainan Provincial Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Hospital, is of great importance in improving ophthalmic and otolaryngological technologies and meeting the demand for medical care in Hainan. Meanwhile, it will promote the construction of Hainan International Tourism Island and accelerate the economic and social development of Hainan Province. Finally, he emphasized that the CPC Hainan Provincial Committee and the People’s Government of Hainan Province have listed the two hospitals into the Top Ten Projects Concerning People’s Livelihood, and the provincial government and related departments will give their full support to the construction of the two hospitals.

President Xu Ningsheng first extended gratitude to the People’s Government of Hainan Province and the people of Hainan for their trust and support for Sun Yat-sen University. He then briefly reviewed the course of SYSU’s cooperation with Hainan and presented an overview of the development of medical sciences in SYSU. President Xu stated that the medical and health cooperation with Hainan Province has been listed into the focus of our work and we will make efforts to implement the agreement in order to satisfy the medical demand of the people of Hainan. He also welcomed Hainan Province to expand areas of collaboration with SYSU.

It is understood that in September 2010, the People’s Government of Hainan Province and Sun Yat-sen University officially signed the production, learning and research cooperation agreement. Since then, SYSU has engaged in a closer and more fruitful cooperation with Hainan Province, contributed to the construction of Hainan International Tourism Island and obtained satisfactory results. In February 2011, the People’s Government of Hainan Province proposed to entrust SYSU with operations management of Hainan Provincial Ophthalmic Hospital, Hainan Provincial Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Hospital. After field investigation, discussion and negotiation for over a year, the two sides finally reached a cooperation agreement.
