On the morning of May 22, 2016, Liu Yandong, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, came to Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) to visit the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ). Yuan Guiren, Minister of Education; Zhu Xiaodan, Governor of Guangdong Province; and Ren Xuefeng, Secretary of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee, attended the event, accompanied by Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, and Luo Jun, President of SYSU.
First, Vice Premier Liu Yandong visited the SYSU Science and Technology Innovation Achievements Exhibition and listened to SYSU President Luo Jun’s report on the developments of the University, especially research work and transformation of scientific and technological achievements. She strongly affirmed the University’s research achievements.

Afterwards, Vice Premier Liu Yandong visited the Tianhe-2 Supercomputer, housed at the NSCC-GZ, and listened to a report made by Prof. Lu Yutong, Director of the NSCC-GZ. Premier Liu Yandong stated that the NSCC-GZ’s work meets the needs of national science and technology innovation and supply-side structural reform, and therefore has great potential in the future. She stressed that the NSCC-GZ should strengthen connections with other universities, research institutes and application units, and make full use of internet technologies to serve the needs of smart-city and smart-country construction; the NSCC-GZ should not only keep the advanced computing level, but also strengthen applications, break the bottle neck, improve utilization rate of resources, and strive to make greater achievements.

After inspection of NSCC-GZ, Vice Premier Liu Yandong hosted the Symposium on Guangdong Higher Education Reform and Innovation. Yuan Guiren, Minister of Education; Zhu Xiaodan, Governor of Guangdong Province; Jiang Xiaoyuan, Deputy Secretary-General of the State Council; Lan Fo’an, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province; Luo Weiqi, Director General of Department of Education of Guangdong Province; Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee; Luo Jun, President of SYSU, as well as leaders of other universities in Guangdong Province attended the symposium.
At the symposium, SYSU President Luo Jun made suggestions on the national plan of building world-class universities and world-class disciplines, and the future development of higher education.

After listening to the report, Vice Premier Liu Yandong delivered an important speech. She pointed out that universities play an irreplaceable and significant role in the national innovation systems and talent cultivation. She mentioned that through deepening the reform of streamlining administration, delegating power, strengthening regulation and improving service, the development potential can be fully unlocked to push forward the healthy development of higher education.
