President Luo Jun visits the Oceania to promote cooperation with high-level universities in Australia and New Zealand

From November 28 to December 5, 2017, Professor Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), visited Australia and New Zealand to promote SYSU’s cooperation with the world’s top 100 universities such as the University of Melbourne, Australian National University, the University of Sidney, and the University of Auckland. The visit achieved fruitful results.

On November 29, President Luo Jun visited the University of Melbourne (UoM), and met with Professor Richard James, Deputy Provost (Academic and Undergraduate) of UoM, as well as representatives from Faculty of Science, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The two sides introduced the recent development of their universities and discussed collaboration in student exchange, joint education program and scientific research in the fields of space science, supercomputing, and medical science. After the meeting, President Luo Jun also visited the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

On November 30, President Luo Jun visited Australian National University (ANU), and met with Professor Brian Schmidt, Vice-Chancellor and President of ANU, as well as representatives from College of Science. The two sides pointed out that SYSU and ANU have conducted cooperation and exchange in physics and astronomy, life sciences, ophthamology, archeology, public policy, etc. The two sides expressed the hope to consolidate existing collaboration and explore and deepen cooperation in student joint training and scientific research. During the visit, President Luo Jun also paid a visit to ANU Gravitational Waves Lab, and exchanged views on gravitational waves with representatives from the Research School of Physics and Engineering.

On December 1, President Luo Jun visited the University of Sydney (UoS), and met with Professor Philippa Pattison, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) of UoS, as well as representatives from Faculty of Science, Faculty of Health Sciences, and Faculty of Medicine. The two sides pointed out that SYSU and UoS have a long history and good basis of cooperation, covering cancer research, dentistry, pharmacy, physics, business, international studies, English language, etc. The two sides held in-depth discussion on deepening collaboration, especially in student exchange and joint graduate program, and exchanged opinions on exploring cooperation in physics and astronomy, philosophy, life sciences, age care, gastroenterology, etc.

On December 4, President Luo Jun visited the University of Auckland (UoA), and met with Professor Jennifer Dixon, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Engagement) of UoA, as well as representatives from Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, and Liggins Institute. The two sides held an in-depth discussion on deepening collaboration in student exchange, joint graduate program, faculty exchange and scientific research, reaching consensuses on strengthening cooperation in medical sciences.

During the visit, President Luo Jun also met with overseas high-level talents and representatives of SYSU Australia Alumni Association.

Since the 1980s, SYSU has ever-increasing cooperation and exchange with academic institutions in the Oceania, including world high level universities such as ANU, UoM, UoS and UoA. SYSU has signed university-level cooperation agreements with UoM, UoS and UoA. The fields of cooperation mainly focus on physics and astronomy, medicine, pharmacy, life sciences, business, energy and environment, etc, making notable achievements in joint student training, high-level talents exchange and research cooperation.
