On December 8th, 2017, the “FLTRP Cup” Uchallenge English Contests and FLTRP Star Teacher Contest came to a close in Beijing FLTRP International Convention Centre. Three students and one teacher from Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) participated in the contests and made remarkable achievements. Guo Man, a teacher from the School of Foreign Languages (FLS), won the champion of FLTRP Star Teacher Contest. Liang Xinlu, a student from FLS won the champion of English Writing Contest. Lin Yuhong from FLS, and Daizhang Zhuoran from the School of Sociology and Anthropology, received a second prize in English Public Speaking Contest and English Reading Contest respectively. SYSU broke the record of this nationwide English Contest and became the first university ever crowned two champions in the same year.

Both the 2017 FLTRP Star Teacher Contest and the “FLTRP Cup” Uchallenge English Contests are held by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press and co-organized by the National Foreign Languages Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, the National Advisory Board on Teaching English Language to Majors in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, and National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education.
Opened to all the English teachers in universities nationwide, the 2017 FLTRP Star Teacher Contest aims at enhancing the quality of foreign language teaching in the universities, promoting the English language faculty, and improving teachers’ ability to design the English courses. In 2017, nearly a thousand English teachers participated in the contest, and half of them competed in the semi-final. 22 stood out and made it to the final in Beijing. With well-knit teaching design and operable activities, Guo Man’s teaching style was fully acknowledged by both the professional judges and public judges, and won the national champion.
