On November 19th, the SYSU 2016 International Cultural Day was held in the Ted Sioeng Student Activity Center on Guangzhou South Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). With exhibitions and stage performances, students from different countries such as Vietnam, Jordan, India, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Korea and the United States used talent shows and performances to present their local culture and display their national spirit.
Students from Pakistan kicked off the festival in style with a demonstration of their traditional dances and a presentation of customary dress. Afterwards came solo performances by singers from Korea; folk dances from Jordan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; and demonstrations of the vivid style of South Asia by students from Sri Lanka and India. The concluding shows were comprised of the Vietnamese dance “Que toi” and a Chinese folk music performance.

At the booths the students exhibited their own country’s traditional clothing, cuisine, arts, crafts, and other representative items. Students could taste American pumpkin pie or even sweet bean syrup brought from Vietnam, as well as mixed Rice with pickles and other kinds of delicious food from South and West Asia. Many students wore their national costumes. Girls could draw “Mehndi” on their hands at the Pakistani booth, while boys were playing Sri Lankan drums nearby.
International students fully displayed both their enthusiasm for learning Chinese and their passion for world culture. They hoped to have more activities like this in the future in order to promote cultural exchanges between both Chinese and foreign students.
About 400 students took part in the Cultural Day, together with Director Mo Hua and Deputy Director Chen Changling from the Student Affairs Office, and Deputy Secretary Wu Dan from the Youth League Committee.
