On September 19-23, 2016, Prof. Downing A. Thomas, Associate Provost and Dean of International Programs of the University of Iowa, Prof. Chaden Djalali, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Prof. Wenfang Tang, Chair and Stanley Hua Hsia Professor of Department of Political Science, visited Sun Yat-sen University.
On the morning of September 20, Prof. Cheng Huanwen, Assistant President of SYSU, met with the guests in Zhongshan Building on Guangzhou South Campus. Prof. Zhang Yanmei, Vice Dean of Lingnan College, Prof. Shen Chengfei, Vice Dean of School of Marxism, Ms. Xu Yao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, attended the meeting.

Prof. Cheng Huanwen extended a warm welcome to Prof. Downing A. Thomas, and introduced the general situation and recent development of SYSU. Prof. Cheng said that the two universities have established good relations, and he hoped that the two sides would further deepen cooperation and exchange.
Prof. Downing A. Thomas thanked SYSU for the warm reception, and introduced the basic situation of the University of Iowa. He said was impressed by SYSU’s development in recent years, and hoped that the two universities would use our respective advantages to consolidate cooperation in the humanities and social sciences as well as public health, and explore collaboration in the fields of nursing and general education.
During the visit, the delegation also visited the School of Nursing, School of Public Health, School of Sociology and Anthropology, and School of Government, and held discussions with representatives from the schools on cooperation in education and research.
Established in 1847, the University of Iowa is a world renowned public research university and a member of the “Public Ivies” in the United States. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the University of Iowa is famous for sociology, political science and psychology. Carver College of Medicine, College of Law, and Tippie College of Business also enjoy high prestige.
In 2010, the University of Iowa and SYSU signed a memorandum of cooperation on academic exchanges. The two sides conducted faculty visits and academic exchanges in the fields of political sciences, social work, creative writing and public health. In early 2016, the two universities renewed the memorandum of cooperation.
